Walking for Rowans
James Hill, Mark Fitch, and Phil Bentley recently embarked on a remarkable 57-mile journey, raising an impressive £3,190 in support of the Rowans Hospice Charity. Their motivation was driven by a desire to challenge themselves while contributing to a local cause.
The epic trek commenced in Calshot, from where they walked to Hythe, crossed over to Southampton City Centre via a ferry, and continued on foot to Hamble-le-Rice. Another ferry ride led them to Warsash, followed by a determined walk to Portchester Castle, ultimately culminating at Rowans Hospice. Their arrival, around 22:30 hours, marked the end of an impressive 50-mile journey. But they pressed on, concluding their extraordinary odyssey at Portsmouth’s Square Tower. In total, their arduous walking challenge spanned approximately 19 hours.
Reflecting on the journey, James shared,
When we had about 9 miles left, we saw the sign for Rowans Hospice. It instantly reaffirmed our purpose and gave us the strength to persevere.
The trio began preparing for this challenge back in January, bolstered by their regular 15-mile social walks initiated during the COVID-19 pandemic. In the run-up to the event, James, Mark, and Phil even organized a quiz night to bolster their fundraising efforts.
The logistics of the day were meticulously planned. They synchronized their route with ferry schedules and strategically placed rest stops every 15 miles. Along the way, they were met by supportive family and friends who provided encouragement.
For James and Mark, this 19-hour walk wasn’t their first foray into fundraising challenges. In 2022, they conquered the Saharan Ultra Challenge in support of Rowans.
Phil expressed,
I had never engaged in fundraising before and was overwhelmed by the incredible community support. This experience was so rewarding that I eagerly anticipate doing it again.
Mark echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of contributing to local charities, particularly Rowans, as they touch the lives of countless individuals.
Following the triumphant completion of their walk, James, Mark, and Phil are contemplating another ambitious challenge on the horizon, possibly spanning 80 miles. In the meantime, they’re gearing up for a Halloween-themed quiz night in early November.
A heartfelt thank you goes out to James, Mark, and Phil for their unwavering support.
