World Alzheimer’s Day takes place on 21 September 2022 as part of World Alzheimer’s Month, an international campaign that aims to raise awareness around Alzheimer’s disease and all types of dementia. “Know dementia, know Alzheimer’s” is the theme for this year’s campaign, with a special focus on post-diagnosis support.
Zena and Emma are the Rowans Hospice Charity’s Dementia Nurses who work in partnership with Remind; the Dementia support service in Portsmouth. Remind aims to support people living in the local area who have received a diagnosis of Dementia.
Both Dementia Nurses are based at the Rowans Living Well Centre and are available to support those with more complex needs. The team recognise that, often, Dementia affects older people who either have other illnesses or whose carers may need extra support. Zena and Emma also visit people’s homes and offer guidance and support throughout the diagnosis.
In recognition of World Alzheimer’s Day, the Charity would like to share some useful information about where you can find support and guidance:
A social group is held by Emma every Saturday morning from 09:00 – 12:00hrs at Hertfordshire Coffee Company in Cosham. The group is for ladies who are of working age and caring for a person with Dementia.
Remind Dementia Group:
A group is held every Wednesday afternoon from 14:00 – 16:00hrs at the Rowans Living Well Centre offering a safe space for people living with Dementia and their carers, to ask questions or discuss any support required with Emma and Zena.
Rowans Living Well Centre Drop-In Service:
At Rowans Living Well Centre staff and volunteers will be able to offer a cup of tea and a calm environment to talk through your options and offer guidance. No referral is needed, so just drop in to chat with one of the team.
Community Drop-in Service:
A drop-in session is held every Friday from 09:00 – 12:30hrs by Zena and Emma at the Carers Centre in Portsmouth, giving the opportunity for anyone with a diagnosis of, or caring for someone with Dementia to drop in and discuss any concerns, whether they be clinical or social.
If you would like to attend one of the above groups or discuss the support available, please contact the Living Well Centre via telephone on 023 9224 8011 or email LWC@rowanshospice.co.uk.
