Medical Director (MD), three sessions a week
Salary – Commensurate with NHS current employment
Rowans Hospice Charity (RHC) provides specialist palliative care to adults with life limiting illnesses in Portsmouth and South East Hampshire (PSEH). The Charity works in partnership with Portsmouth University Hospital NHS Trust, Solent NHS Trust and Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust (SHFT) to provide seamless care and support to patients and families from diagnosis into bereavement. RHC services comprise: Rowans Living Well Centre; a specialist In-patient Unit; Hospice at Home; an integrated (NHS and RHC) Psychology and Bereavement Service for adults and children; and an education and training programme.
The role of MD is appointed by Trustees from within the Consultant and Specialist Grade body of doctors that are predominantly employed by SHFT; therefore, all applicants will be either already working within the service or applying for one of the current Consultant vacancies across the locality. This arrangement with the NHS has been in place since 1994 when the Hospice first opened; originally an honorary position and remunerated by the Charity since 2012. Throughout this period there has been just two MDs, both of whom have enjoyed the diversification within the role and the ability to be embedded into the culture and values of an independent hospice charity, without forgoing NHS employment and being part of an NHS Consultant/Specialist Grade job plan across hospital, hospice and the community (reference Consultant/Specialist Grade Advertisement).
The MD will report directly to the Chief Executive (CEO) and will be an integral part of the Charity’s Senior Management Team, known as the Hospice Executive Group (HEG). In conjunction with the CEO, the MD will oversee and develop the Medical Budget and will work closely with the Director of Clinical Services and Registered Manager (CQC), with joint and overall accountability for service delivery and reporting.
The MD will have clinical accountability for all medical practitioners working at RHC whether employed by the Charity or the NHS, including doctors in training. Line management for doctors employed by the hospice (SAS or Trust grades) will be provided the Specialist Grade Medical Service Manager. Compliance with Medical Revalidation for doctors employed by RHC is the responsibility of the MD, overseen by the Responsible Officer for SHFT. Separate arrangements are in place for educational supervision and Named Clinical Supervisor roles.
The MD will work closely with Trustees and the HEG in developing and executing the RHC Strategy, Business Plan and associated operational strategies and policies, with detailed attention to the delivery of the Clinical Strategy and Quality Account.
