Cookery Course Brings People Together at Rowans Hospice Living Well Centre

The latest Rowans Living Well Services Cookery Course has come to an end, with participants celebrating six weeks of learning, companionship and shared memories over a special afternoon tea at the Living Well Centre.
Supporting Bereavement Through Cooking
This most recent cookery course was the first one to be held in our Living Well Centre kitchen. Previous courses had taken place at Havant and South Downs College, but bringing the sessions into the Living Well Centre created an even more welcoming and familiar environment for those attending.
The six-week cookery course is designed to support bereaved people at different stages of life, whether they are rediscovering a love of cooking, adapting to new routines at home, or looking for companionship and confidence in the kitchen. Each session combines practical cooking skills with opportunities for conversation and sharing experiences in a relaxed and supportive environment. Participants learn simple, nutritious recipes that can be batch cooked and frozen, helping to build confidence in cooking for one after bereavement while connecting with others and learning new skills.
“It’s harder to cook for yourself when your partner has died,” shared one participant.
Throughout the course, the group worked together to prepare a variety of dishes while sharing stories, memories and experiences. The sessions also helped attendees gain practical skills and grow in confidence in the kitchen.
One participant said:
My husband used to sharpen the knives, but now Laura has shown me how to do it.
The final session ended with a special afternoon tea featuring baked goods prepared by the group themselves.
How the Course Is Funded
The course was made possible thanks to generous funding from The Oaks Havant Crematorium. Rachel, Manager at The Oaks Havant Crematorium, said;
Supporting the Rowans cookery course truly matters to us because we see the difference it makes to people’s lives. It’s not just about learning to cook – it’s about restoring confidence at a time when people may feel fragile, uncertain or disconnected. Watching individuals grow in self-belief, take pride in what they create, and share moments of laughter and conversation around food is incredibly powerful.
The course creates a sense of belonging. It offers warmth, routine and reassurance, and reminds people that they are not alone. For many, these sessions become something to look forward to – a place where they feel safe, supported and valued as individuals.
To us, supporting the Rowans Cookery Course means standing alongside people with compassion and kindness, helping them rediscover purpose and small moments of joy when they need it most.
