Light Up a Life

I first attended the Lake of Lights in 2013, the year my mum died. My young son and I went along to light a candle in her memory.Middle aged woman, short blond hair, sat on a blue sofa, wearing a light blue sparkly jumper and dark blue jeans, her hands are crossed over each other
It became something we now look forward to every year, a peaceful way of remembering mum, and, over time, other loved ones too.

What struck me most was how it felt to be surrounded by others who were there for the same reason. Even though I did not know many people in Portsmouth, I never felt alone. The reflection of the candles on the water, the quiet moments of remembrance, and the feeling of being part of something bigger was truly special.

This December, I invite you to join me at the Lake of Lights, taking place on Sunday, 14 December from 5:00pm to 7:00pm at Canoe Lake, Southsea, to dedicate a light in memory of your loved one and see all the candles reflected across the water. Whether you come alone, with family, or friends, you will be welcomed into a community of people all coming together to remember their loved ones. It is a truly moving evening.

I will be lighting my candle again this year and thinking of those I love. I hope you will join me in dedicating your own light, donating to Rowans Hospice, and coming along to join this special evening with me.

With warmest wishes,
Karen Truckell

What is Light Up a Life?

Light Up a Life is a cherished series of community events held by hospices across the country during the festive season. Christmas is a time to come together, to celebrate, and to make new memories with those we hold dear. It’s also a time for quiet reflection, and is an opportunity to remember those we’ve lost but who remain forever in our hearts.

On Sunday, 14 December 2025, Rowans Hospice will host the Lake of Lights at Canoe Lake, Southsea. This special gathering brings together our community, volunteers, and families touched by our care to light candles in loving memory of those no longer with us.

The evening is open to everyone, whether or not you have been supported by Rowans Hospice.
