Can you spare a few hours during the week or at the weekend? Then why not join our Rowans Hospice Retail team of volunteers?

We urgently need to fill vacancies at our Fareham, North End and Wickham shops.



Rowans Retail is proud to support Rowans Hospice by providing a reliable source of income, enabling support to the community when it matters most. Come and join our expanding team, and you too can be part of something amazing.


You can make new friends, gain valuable work experience and really make a difference by contributing to an income stream for the Rowans Hospice. We are very flexible with hours and you can chose the hours to suit you.


Exciting opportunities have arisen for Sales Assistants who want to use their customer service skills in a very fast moving retail environment. Responsibilities include processing stock donations and providing great customer service to the highest standard. As well as sorting through and organising our donations to find items suitable for a specific fashion section of the shop, you will have the chance to create exciting displays or perhaps develop new areas.

Rowans Hospice runs several fundraising events across the year which raise vital funds that support the care we give to those living with a life limiting illness, their carers and families. 

These events are made a success by the generous bank of volunteers who give up their time to help out on the day, from a couple of hours to full days, there are all sorts of jobs. Whether you want to help set up and take registrations, or be there at the end to cheer people on, we need you!

Our in-house catering team provide meals and our ward volunteers distribute them to our in-patients. Ward volunteers serve breakfast or lunch which are approximately a four hour shift, and supper which is approximately a two and a half hour shift. Ward Volunteers work in pairs wherever possible.

If you have excellent interpersonal and listening skills and empathy, giving the gift of your time can make a huge difference to our patients and their families, and will provide you with the knowledge that you have been a great asset to our multi-disciplinary team. Training and support are offered on an on-going basis.

Come and join our team of volunteers at our Farlington warehouse, working in a friendly environment and offering the opportunity to meet new people and make new friends.


We are looking for people to list items for sale on the internet to help raise much needed funding for the Hospice.


You will need to possess the following requirements for the role:

  • IT skills
  • a passion for selling
  • literate
  • an eye for detail
  • basic product knowledge
  • be willing to learn

Volunteer Porter

Come and join us working as a Volunteer Porter based at our friendly Farlington Warehouse.

You should be able to lift and shift medium and heavy loads. Other requirements are:

  • Confident with customer service
  • able to take direction
  • good communication skills
  • adaptable to last minute changes
  • literate

Local knowledge would be advantageous as you may need to navigate the van driver.
Whatever amount of time you are able to give, we can work around you. We would love to hear from you.


Volunteer Packer

Our warehouse team sell items on ebay to raise funds for Rowans Hospice., and we are looking for people to pack items that have been sold on the internet.


We are looking for applicants who are:

  • Organised
  • Are thorough and pay attention to detail
  • Take pride in securing customers purchases
  • Have basic IT skill to print of delivery notes, invoices etc.

However much time you have to give, we can work around your availability.

Come and join our team of volunteers at our Farlington warehouse. As a donations processor you will take receipt of clothing and bric a brac donations, sorting stock appropriately ready for distribution to our shops. Working in a friendly environment and offering the opportunity to meet new people and make new friends, you will need to possess the following requirements for the role:-

- good communication skills

- able to stand for long periods at a time

- able to lift and shift medium to heavy loads

- identify damaged items both clothing and hard stock

- be a team player within the Volunteering team

- able to work on your own initiative in accordance to Warehouse processes

Whatever amount of time you can give, we can work around you.

Do you want to make a real difference to patients by supporting them in their own home?  If you have good people skills and you are a good listener with an empathetic nature, why not become a Hospice Companion?

Training is provided at the Hospice for this role, to support patients who use the main Hospice or  Rowans Living Well Centre services.


If you would be happy to choose from one or perhaps more of the following tasks to help keep people in their own home, then we'd love to hear from you. Hours are flexible and will be to suit you.

  • Taking people to and from medical appointments; getting shopping and or taking someone shopping.
  • Chatting over a cup tea.
  • Dog walking.
  • Small gardening tasks, e.g. lawn mowing, pruning.
  • Light housework; making snacks such as a cup of tea and a sandwich. 
  • Sitting with a patient to allow a family member or carer to go out for an hour or two.

Come and be part of an amazing team, make friends and make a difference! If you have a flair with flowers, you could make a real impact in patients rooms and around the Hospice itself. We are regularly given donations of flowers and your role would be to arrange them beautifully around the Hospice. The flowers make the building look homely and bring smiles to the faces of patients, visitors and staff alike. You could volunteer once a week, once a fortnight or monthly. On average our volunteers spend half day arranging flowers, Monday to Saturday inclusive.

Day Care is an integral part of The Rowans Hospice and is open on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. We are keen to encourage volunteers on every day, but have a particular need on a Wednesday.

Day Care enhances quality of life for patients by maintaining their independence and providing personalised care in a homely and relaxing environment. During their day with us patients can pursue artistic and creative projects.

Would you like an opportunity to share your arts and crafts skills with our patients and gain a great feeling of satisfaction from supporting them? You are welcome to apply to be in the privileged position of volunteering alongside our patients.
Alternatively if you are not sure you have the skills but have enthusiasm and are willing to help hand things out to patients and generally help support them, your enthusiasm would be warmly received.
Required experience: Good interpersonal skills.

If you can greet people with a smile and make our visitors feel welcome at what might be a difficult time for them, then come and join our team of volunteers and really make a difference.


Due to the nature of the work, good interpersonal skills are essential as is an empathetic nature as you will need to be able to relate well to visitors who may at times be distressed.


Experience of reception duties are desirable but not essential. Full training will be given.

Duties include:

  1. Answering all incoming calls to the hospice switchboard, forwarding calls and taking messages when needed during Hospice office working hours.
  2. Accurately taking a message if staff are busy or not available and ensuring that written messages are delivered appropriately.
  3. Demonstrating a consistent level of courtesy and consideration to all patients and their visitors, staff and volunteers.

Receptionist / Telephonist experience preferred, but not essential, as training will be given.

Come and join our friendly team of staff and volunteers. You can make a real difference to our patients. Some of our patients come in for half a day, a day, or have a stay on the inpatient ward.  Many of them may not have had an opportunity to have had their hair washed or trimmed to help.

  • a fully qualified and experienced hairdresser
  • a reliable, professional, empathic and friendly team player
  • a good communicator with excellent customer service skills
  • a person with their own liability insurance.
