In-patient Specialist Palliative Care Service

Specialty Doctor Grade Position

Full Time, 11 sessions per week including on-call work. Part time applicants will be considered.

Post available for a 12-month fixed term period, commencing from May 2021. (Will accept enquiries for August start).

Rowans Hospice provides specialist palliative care to adults with life limiting illnesses in Portsmouth and South East Hampshire. We work in partnership with our two community trusts to offer community, day and in-patient specialist services.

You will join a friendly and well supported multi-professional team, committed to high standards of care.  Your primary role will be to deliver specialist palliative care to the patients on our 19 bedded in-patient unit. This is a service post to assist the Consultants and established Specialty and Associate Specialist doctors with the management of an increasingly complex and intense caseload. Although not a training post, there will be excellent support for personal development and plenty of opportunity for education and quality improvement work.

This is an excellent opportunity for doctors wishing to gain experience and skills in specialist palliative medicine, potentially prior to applying for specialty training.

The role gave me the opportunity to develop my specialist knowledge; learning how to manage common palliative care symptoms, complex ethical cases and communicating in difficult circumstances.  I learnt how to work within a multidisciplinary team to coordinate holistic patient-centred care and found every member of staff friendly and approachable. The post forms part of the Hospice on-call rota (a 4% availability supplement is payable).  The rota is non-resident, and provides cover for Rowans Hospice in-patient unit 1 in 5 including weekends, with senior supervision available at all times.  We regret that on-call accommodation cannot be provided; doctors are required to remain within one hour’s travelling distance at all times whilst on-call.


Consultant / SAS support is available at all times.

Annual and Study Leave will be paid pro rata (FTE 30 days Annual Leave; two days Study Leave in 6 months).

Salary – Specialty Doctor pay scale MC46-01/ dependent on palliative care experience.


Suitable candidates will have at least six months’ experience of General Medicine in the UK and in total at least twelve months’ post-Foundation experience.
