As a charity, The Rowans Hospice relies on the goodwill of volunteers to provide support across all areas of our operation, including the Hospice, where continually high levels of care are provided, and our shops where volunteers assist in the day-to-day running, ensuring reliable income streams are generated.
Our shops stock a wide range of high quality goods, from decorative accessories to clothing, all at affordable prices. We also have Furniture Shops in Stoke Road, Gosport and in Cosham.
You’ll never be too far away from one of our shops, so why not take a look; find a shop near you pop in and make a purchase - your money will be helping us to continue to provide high quality care at The Rowans Hospice.

By volunteering with our Trading Company, you’ll join our valued volunteering network who make a huge contribution to The Rowans Hospice. Your training will include information about the Hospice as well as the Trading Company. In your role with the shops, you’ll be the public face of The Rowans Hospice, talking to the general public on a daily basis about the services we offer and the work we do. Have a look at our area of care.
Aside from representing the Hospice, your role will be to ensure that the shop is stocked and presented appropriately to ensure our loyal customers can always find something new and interesting to purchase.
During 2013-2014, The Trading Company generated more than £460,000 for The Rowans Hospice. This would not have been possible without the generous support from our network of volunteers, the kind donations made by the general public, and of course our loyal customers.
We are always more than happy to recruit volunteers, so if you are interested, or know someone who is, please let them know about us!
Volunteering with us is not just rewarding, it’s a great way to meet new people, use your inter-personal skills, develop product knowledge and to make a huge difference to your local hospice – below are a few of the volunteer roles we have in our shops:
- Select and prepare items for display
- Receive donated goods
- Serve customers and operate the till
- Stock display and presentation
- Pricing of stock
- Demonstrate excellent customer service skills
- Repair items in need of a little TLC
All shops open Monday - Saturday 9:30am – 4:30pm. As a volunteer, you can choose either the morning 9.30am-1pm or afternoon 1pm-4.30pm shift. Please note that the Wickham shop is also open on a Sunday!
AREAS OF VOLUNTEER NEED AT THE MOMENT
Southsea Book Shop - Do you like books? Reading? Talking to people? Do you have some spare time where you could support our shop staff to turn around books quickly, could you serve customers, many of them regulars and sort through donated books to ensure high quality and good value.
Havant/Leigh Park Shop - Our shops are in need of more volunteers to join their team, would you like to serve customers? Prepare stock for sale and display items? Do you have just a few hours a week to spare? Please either call into the shop for an application pack or call us now.
Farlington Processing - If you enjoy rummaging and being able to assess the quality of donated goods – you’ll love volunteering at our Farlington processing centre. It’s here that all of the goods donated to us are sent for sorting – ensuring that only the best quality items are sent to our shops and that a good range of items is sent to each of our outlets, making each a real treasure trove! At the processing centre, you’ll be hands on with the donated items and will be the first person who gets to see the potential value of each piece.
If any of these sound like you, please let us know by contacting the Volunteers Office on 023 922 48004 or email firstname.lastname@example.org
