July/August 2015 - Here are the areas where we need volunteers urgently.
Hospice Companions - Hospice Companion Volunteers support patients and their carers in the local community, offering practical or emotional support in the patient's own home. An hour or two a week providing a listening ear over a cup of tea can help prevent social isolation. Our volunteers also help with practical tasks such as ironing, vacuuming or dog walking. These every day jobs can make a huge difference to someone with a life-shortening illness who is learning to adjust to their illness, and who may no longer be able to carry out household chores in the way they may have been able to previously. Hours can be chosen to suit your availability and traveling expenses will be paid.
Complementary Therapists - We are seeking Volunteer Complementary Therapists who can offer reflexology, and or hands and foot massage, and or a gentle shoulder massage to our terminally ill patients. This will be an enhancement to conventional treatment and care and the therapist will work alongside our multi-disciplinary team on the ward. Applicants must have undertaken a recognised training course in a named therapy and have been awarded a registered qualification. Applicants must hold their own insurance. A regular commitment of one to two hours is preferred. This could be weekly, fortnightly or monthly.
Hairdressers - Volunteer opportunities have arisen for Volunteer Hairdressers to provide a hairdressing service to the in-patients, which includes carrying out shampoos, cutting and blow drying. A regular commitment of one to two hours is preferred. This could be weekly, fortnightly or monthly.
Manicurists - We are looking for Volunteer Manicurists who can offer a basic hand care service to patients. This will involve cleaning and polishing patients' fingernails and or toenails, and to provide a hand massage where appropriate, using non allergenic hand cream. Again a regular commitment of one to two hours is preferred, weekly, fortnightly or monthly.
