What is Macmillan Solutions?

An exciting new volunteer-led project, in partnership with The Rowans Hospice, designed to help people affected by cancer get on with their lives.

Who is the service for?

It will be for people who are directly affected by cancer, and could also be for a relative, carer or friend of someone with cancer. Initially this service is being offered to those with GPs in the following areas: Havant, Hayling Island, Emsworth, Waterlooville, Denmead and Cowplain.

How does Macmillan Solutions work?

Following an assessment visit from staff at The Rowans Hospice, the person referred for visitor support will be carefully matched with a specially trained volunteer in order to provide them with the service they need.

Macmillan Solutions will offer

• Emotional support - for example having regular contact with someone who listens
• Practical support - such as help with day to day tasks, like walking the dog or help in the house
• Financial support - where appropriate this may be a personal budget, allocated to meet required needs and which is non means tested

Is there anything a volunteer visitor cannot provide?

Yes - there are certain tasks that our volunteers are not legally insured or trained to carry out. These are

• Personal care - ie bathing, showering, feeding
• Moving and handling individuals
• Heavy lifting 
• Administering medication of any kind, including eye drops

Working together

Macmillan Cancer Support is working with The Rowans Hospice to bring Macmillan Solutions to life in this part of Hampshire. This is a pilot project and although the service will not yet be available to everyone, we hope to extend it in the future so that even more people affected by cancer can benefit.
